Surgery

Hi.

Yeah... a month...

I suppose that's just what happens... so here's the news:

I am scheduled to have an endoscopic right plantar fasciotomy on September 12. Recovery time is about 6 weeks, but I will be walking in a boot within a couple of days and able to swim and bike at the 3 week mark.

How did I finally come to the decision for surgery? Well... its been a long time coming really. 3 years of other treatments that have been less than effective for more than a day at a time. Taping my foot, expensive orthotics physical therapy, iontophoresis, exercises to strengthen my ankles and hips (which have helped my ankles and hips, but not my foot) and to stretch my plantar fascia, and the dreaded cortisone shots in the heel. Nothing has worked. Only the cortisone has lasted more than a day or so and even that is not a good long term solution. Large doses of cortisone are not good for your body long term. So here I am.

The procedure is pretty straight forward. Two tiny incisions on either side of the heel and probably only 2 or 3 stitches on each side. I have picked a very experienced and highly regarded surgeon for the procedure (out patient)... he even comes with the recommendation of my mother in law. ;)

In any case, that is where I am... and hopefully... before clinicals start in January I'll be right as rain... hopefully.

Don't think I'm not nervous about this, because I am. This is surgery and while it is "out patient" and I'll be under sedation rather than full general I'm still not excited about the whole being knocked out bit. The last time that happened I was sick when I woke up and that sucked ass.

So... maybe I'll get back to being smashing at some point... I certainly hope I will.
